27 Aug The Pros and Cons of Drinking Beverages Other than Water
Water is undeniably the best drink you can have for both your dental and overall physical health. But how do other drinks affect your dental health? Let’s take a look at drinks that are, and a few that are not, mouth healthy.
Milk
Milk is low in sugar and full of calcium and some protein, two vital nutrients for strengthening your teeth.
Unsweetened Green Tea
A study originally published in the Journal of Periodontology suggest that regular consumption of green tea may promote healthy teeth and gums.
Unsweetened Black Tea
Some research by dental experts suggest polyphenols and tannins present in black tea kill and reduce cavity causing bacteria. However tannins can also stain teeth so consuming black tea in moderation is best.
Coffee
Like black tea, coffee contains polyphenols that can be beneficial to your oral health. However, tannins are also present that make coffee notorious for causing tooth stains. Drink no more than two cups a day.
Juice
Juice contains a ton of natural sugars. Though they may be natural, these sugars can wreak havoc on your dental health. Your kids may love them, but it’s best to keep them away, or at least place strict limitations on the amount of juice your children can consume.
Soda
Just say no to sodas. Sodas are bad for your oral health in multiple ways, mainly because of the high sugar and acid content. It’s best to stay away from all sodas, including diet drinks.
The only drink you can safely consume without limits is water. Water has many benefits, including keeping your mouth clean and fighting dry mouth. It’s also calorie and caffeine free, so you can drink as much as you want without any guilt.
