School is in full swing and now afternoons are filled with homework and after-school activities. Unfortunately, as school life makes real life busier, our children’s healthy diets often go down the drain. As parents, it’s easy to grab a pre-packaged snack cake or bag of chips for a quick after-school snack in between band practice and football games. But if you’re not careful to keep healthy snacks a priority in your children’s diet, those easy but sugary snacks will wreak havoc on their teeth. Luckily for parents, yummy, healthy, quick snack options abound. Take a look.
Unsweetened yogurt. Yogurt is the perfect substitute for gelatin or pudding, as long as you are choosing sugar-free plain yogurt. Mix it with bits of fresh fruit for added flavor and try freezing it in popsicle molds for a cool treat on warmer after-school afternoons. It’s also perfect for dipping fresh fruit like apples and pears!

Natural cheese. Natural, unprocessed cheese is a versatile snack that’s also good for your teeth. Cheese helps cut down plaque growth and eating cheese produces more saliva, which helps wash away cavity-causing bacteria. For a delicious, fun yet healthy snack, pair cheese with fruit on skewers or simply serve up a small tray of yogurt, cheese, and fruit slices.
Fresh fruit and raw veggies. Fresh fruits like apples and pears and raw veggies like celery, broccoli, and cauliflower are good for the teeth as well as the whole body. Again, you can serve these up with a yogurt-based dip or natural peanut butter for a tasty treat.
Naturally flavored, sugar-free water. Always encourage your kids to go for water instead of sugary sports drinks or sodas. Make your own flavored water infusions by using your children’s favorite fruits and herbs like mint for a drink so delicious they’ll never want another Powerade or Coke in their lunchbox again. Mixed nuts. This easy snack is low in sugar and high in protein which means there’s no question why mixed nuts are the perfect snack for the whole family.
Ants on a log. You’ve probably seen this quick snack concoction on Pinterest. Basically, you slather your choice of natural, unsweetened nut butter like peanut butter or almond butter on a stick of celery and then dot the butter with pieces of dried fruit like raisins. However, dried fruits and fruit snacks are actually chock full of sugar so we recommend replacing those with dark chocolate chips. Yes, chocolate contains sugar.
