Dry Mouth Relief

Dry Mouth Relief

dry mouth relief

Dry mouth is more than just an annoying condition. Left untreated, dry mouth can increase the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and mouth thrush.

Dry mouth is often a symptom of another underlying issue or is a result of using certain types of medications such as antihistamines, hormone medications, bronchodilators, and antihypertensives. It can also result from poor lifestyle, dietary or dental hygiene choices such as smoking, drinking too much alcohol, eating too much sugar, and poor dental care. Luckily, relief is available for dry mouth including a familiar over-the-counter treatment that recently gained official approval from the American Dental Association.

Home Treatments

If your dry mouth is the result of poor lifestyle, dietary choices or a lack of good dental hygiene, you can stop the issue by making changes such as:

  • Avoiding alcohol and tobacco
  • Avoiding caffeine and sugar
  • Improving oral care at home, including brushing twice a day and flossing once daily every single day

Sometimes dry mouth can’t be avoided, particularly when you are taking certain medications. However, you can find relief by chewing sugar-free gum, sucking on sugar-free candy or using a humidifier at night. Relief is also available in an over-the-counter medicated mouth rinse known as Biotene. Biotene is no stranger to the dental aisle but it’s only recently been approved by the ADA as a safe and effective dental treatment.
