02 Jan Cavity Prevention with Dental Sealants
Ask any dentist the best way to prevent cavities and their answer will likely include brushing twice a day and flossing daily. But, no matter how thorough we are when we practice our daily oral hygiene routines, there’s always a chance we’ll miss something. After all, it’s nearly impossible to reach every nook and cranny, especially in your back teeth. That’s where dental sealants come in.
Dental sealants are like tiny, invisible raincoats for your teeth. Only instead of keeping your clothes dry, sealants keep cavities from developing by preventing leftover food particles and bacteria from sticking to your teeth. According to the American Dental Association, dental sealants have shown to reduce the risk of cavities in 80 percent of molars.
Both children and adults can receive and benefit from dental sealants. However, the earlier dental sealants are placed, the better. Dental sealants are designed for use on back teeth, or back molars. The ADA recommends sealing back molars as soon as they begin to erupt–which can be as early as age six. Because of this recommendation and the strong evidence that indicates dental sealants are extremely effective in preventing cavities, we include dental sealants as a standard in pediatric dental care at Renew Dental. If you have children over the age of six who have never received dental sealants, click here to request an appointment with our office.
